Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minn. — Police in the Twin Cities are executing search warrants and arresting people connected with planned protests during next week's Republican National Convention.
Tony Jones, a member of the RNC Welcoming Committee, says 60 people were detained last night for at least two hours. No arrests were made, but computers, Welcoming Committee paraphanalia, maps and puppets were confiscated.

Baffled
Reading through this thread I was baffled by the fact that some were arguing that we don't live in a police state. It is is simple as this: If you fear the police when practicing your Constitutional rights, then you live in a police state. I don't think anyone can honestly say that while protesting they don't fear the police are going to find an "excuse" to arrest them (raising your voice at an officer, looking intimidating and frustrated when talking to them during a protest etc). I am a law abiding citizen but still like everyone else tense up when I see a cop on the road. It should be the other way around. Even Jefferson laid this one out for us.

From far away, I have considered the US to be a police state since at least the early 1990s. I even recall people grin at me when I used to say it.
Having studied in the Soviet Union (1979-1983) during Brezhnev's later years and those preceding the advent of Gorbachev, I know what a police state is and I know how totalitarianism works. In the soviet union that I visted, dissent had long died. Many people knew things weren't swell, but they also knew that dissent did not feed their family. Moreover, the Soviet controlled media was doing a finer job than the KGB (secret police). They believed that America was a fascist empire that was all out to conquer their great communist country. Most believed that capitalism was evil and that their socialist project would one day lead to a communist paradise.
It was during these years that many began to secretly doubt these claims, especially the high production rates announced daily on the media (when the shops were getting more empty). It was also a time when jokes and clandestine songs started to spread the word that the emperor had no clothes - mildly, as it was still dangerous to dissent with people you didn't trust (I had no problems - and I used to say things too - but the policy with foreign students was to send them back home, which wasn't such a bad thing really, you even got your ticket paid up |:)
But there were no protests for the police to quell - in effect you only saw traffic police. There was, in the end, just plain cynicism. Without the people having risen or really protested, the soviet empire had to collapse nonetheless.
My message?
Although Gorbachev triggered it, it was plain cynicism that pulled down the Soviet empire. With or without the revolutionary movement, the American empire will collapse anyway. Yet with the Revolution, the collapse is fast-forwarded into a spiral.
They are out of time. Even controlling the internet is too late now. Any action they may take in the coming years will only accelerate their demise.

When a CODE officer sends me a letter giving me 5 days to conform MY back yard to their specs, with a possible $1000.00 a day, every day, until conformed & then I actually cooperate. I then call in & they still have to verify. When the officer comes out 2 weeks later & I confront her with my feelings on the matter , she has me arrested for invoking my property rights. That should concern all, but doesn't. The Dist Justice ( or mediator ).supports the POLICE complaint: ( that I impeeded the officer) by PA State statute, faceing up to 2 years in prison for speaking my piece. THAT IS A POLICE STATE, PA.

Though I have no doubt such totalitarianism could be in store for us, this case is not what it portends to be!
Anything which creates a state of fear from little actual fact, using circumstances which could be easily and often misread due to hype, flashy video, and little background, is to be suspect. Especially that which inflames the passions though absent sound reasoning and logic. This is such a case. I have no doubt that if these people were not actually out on the street drawing proper law enforcement attention to themselves, then the NLG called or prepped the PD ahead of time, either setting them up, or choreographing the whole incident.
They have been one of the best front organizations at perfecting this propaganda for 3-4 decades. When they show their freedom hating faces in "sheep's clothing", just like the ACLU, beware, for they do not receive and utilize their enormous neocon funding in vain!
Having been very familiar with the law enforcement profession, I can assure you that the bulk of them, though suffering under the increasing load of neocon financial influence of their towns and cities, remain still local people, and conservative as a whole. There is no doubt that the Republic is under attack, and one of the focuses has been the attack on freedom, but the exaggeration of the danger and it's attendant passions absent reason, logic, and sound judgment, has always been a hallmark of the neocon funded communist revolution approach... it has been seen in every country which lost it's freedom.
My friends, focus upon the one needful thing left to us in these next few days, and that is prayer that the proverbial "lightning may strike", and that an awakening of the minds of the delegates may take place, realizing that 67% of the land is unsatisfied with the two main candidates!
After having prayed, lock your vision, and load your minds for the battle of the body politic, for there is much to be done in, around, and outside, the floor of the convention.
For every one delegate there will be 6-8 press hoping and praying for a story: for them prepare your talking points and your details of the perfidy and organized crime of the McCain campaign, which has cheated their way to the top of the heap, violating all the rules of County, State, and National RNC origin, and many state and federal laws in the process; be prepared to engage in friendly but passionate discussion with any and all who will listen, for most delegates have never heard a rational, let alone a complete, Ron Paul presentation or speech!
Most GOP delegates, excepting the hard core left wing, pro-choice, pro-amnesty, pro-war, neocon dupes, are in reality confused as to how their favorite candidates one by one, were either marginalized, or dropped out in sudden reverse role, shockingly in support of the least likely candidate of all... the candidate least a Republican, and least deserving of the appellation!

Having done a Google search, the NLG looks to be communist ... they talk about personal rights over property rights. Sounds good to a neophyte, until you understand that people without property equals poverty (no rights, at all!)

while it's true, they may not exercise a high level of unjustifiable, unprovoked, & unconstitutional force as a matter of course. but if it is practiced at all across the country, even in small degrees, having few occurrences does NOT negate the fact that they are behaving with a police state mentality.
the police represent the state -- they are "the state" -- in a prosecution, they speak on behalf of "the people." each and every time a our constitutional rights are violated by them in the name of homeland security or otherwise, and their superiors protect their actions, it isn't just a police state. it's flat out tyranny.
What I find irrational is the use of
a video like above is being used as evidence of a police state. All the chaos surrounding a national political convention is that last place to be looking for evidence of a police state. It's a generally chaotic situation where things like this happen and have always happened. It's not part of a new trend or anything. Of course the police shouldn't seize someone' s camera. But this not a case of a systematic thing were freedom of the press has been banned. It's not part of the law. It's just a few police doing someting unlawful. These are sporadic things that happen in a situation like this, where both some protestors and some police get out of control. If you're going to argue that the U.S. a police state, this as evidence is laughable. You need evidence of things put into law, not cases of police violating the law in a chaos situation.

Police misconduct does not consittute a police state.
If this is a police state, then what is China? There, by law, freedom of the press doesn't exist period, and saying negative things about the government or protesting results in execution or prison for life. If you protest in the streets, you're simply gunned down.
