Brian Doherty: Rand Paul to Speak at Republican National Convention, Says Reuters

Brian Doherty|Aug. 7, 2012 2:57 am

Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) isn't currently scheduled to speak at the Republican National Convention, but according to Reuters*, his son Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.)--the one with the future with the GOP--will be.

This is a sign that Rand Paul's clear attempts to be the libertarian-leaning Republican who actually cares if he's pissing off the rest of his party are working, so far. As I suggested in front of the senator during our joint presentation back in May about my book Ron Paul's Revolution: The Man and the Movement He Inspired, his future as a potential presidential candidate might be rich whether or not Romney wins this year.

That would be SWEEET!

They introduce Rand, and Rand give a few obligatory remarks, then invites dad to the podium to finish. (This idea was posted by someone else but I just had to second that motion!)

;-))

Everyone of them things, make me Physically sick!!
But if Rand would walk to the podium, then SAY. I would like to introduce my father & the only one here that stands for your LIBERTY!
That would make my day!. ;-)

which move with him like flies on a summer day.

Opened my eyes! They count on us being Dumbasses.

So will Rand be introducing Romney?

Since he endorsed him, I guess that might be a logical progression.

Even a bigger question:

Will Rand be praising the name of Ron Paul during his speech, thanking him and the many Ron Paul supporters who got him into the Senate?

HE BETTER BE DOING BOTH!!

Rand Paul is our best bet for 2016

Rand Paul is our best bet for 2016. He is clearly a great promoter of liberty. – Don’t mistake politics for policy. I supported Ron Paul in 2008 and 2012 and Rand Paul in 2010 and I expect to support Rand in 2016. Without Rand Paul there is no liberty movement. Watch and see. And don’t give me any Gary Johnson business – Gary Johnson will take the liberty movement precisely nowhere. We need to be realistic and serious about change.

Not for Rand OR GJ

No intentions of supporting either because I am trying to be realistic and serious about change.

Comments like yours piss me off. What makes you think 2016 will be around? What makes you think we are going to win in 2016? I mean seriously.. be real with yourself. This was our last chance. If we don't win then next is taking it to the streets. We had our chance this year. The GOP wasn't ready for this and we caught them off guard. They will be more than ready next time. Plus they corrupted the whole election. What makes you think we got another chance? 2016?.. Give me a break. Your clearly not a Ron Paul Supporter and if you are.. your a quitter and Gary Johnson is waiting for you on the sidelines.

Yeh, and we know what kind of future THAT will be,

Now, don't we....Rand, you betrayed your own father....you have NO class....you just couldn't wait, could you to endorse Mitt.

Can't believe you even accepted the invitation to speak at the convention, right on the heels of the traitors ostracizing your very own father!!!

1. Correction" Rand paul is

1. Correction" Rand paul is "clearly a great promoter of Rand Paul." My evidence: his total failure to campaign for Ron at the crucial state conventions and his endorsement of Romney on the radio show of a man who LED the effort to depict his dad as a racist in December. What if your son did that too you? Would you trust him?

Another Correction: "Without RON PAUL AND THE MOVEMENT HE CREATED, Rand would be an obscure doctor in Kentucky." What does he give us in return? Betrayal, duplicity, and inaction.

RNC Chairman Priebus Announces Additional Republican Convention Headliners

Tampa, Fla. - Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus today announced the second list of headliners addressing the Republican National Convention August 27-30. Additional convention speakers, including the keynote, will be announced in the coming days and weeks. The speakers are:

Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, 43rd governor of Florida and current chairman of the Foundation for Florida's Future;

Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin, the first woman to serve as both Oklahoma lieutenant governor and governor, and the first woman elected to Congress from Oklahoma since the 1920s;

U.S. Senator Rand Paul, junior senator from Kentucky and founder of the U.S. Senate Tea Party Caucus; and

Former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum, 2012 presidential primary candidate, and U.S. Senator (1995-2007) and U.S. Representative (1991-1995) from Pennsylvania.

"I am thrilled to announce Governor Bush, Governor Fallin, Senator Paul and Senator Santorum will address our convention," said Priebus. "As our party unites around Governor Romney, these four great leaders will lend their voices in support of his vision to get America back on track."

"Governors Bush and Fallin, and Senators Paul and Santorum are among our party's most respected leaders, and their participation at the Republican Convention will help generate enthusiasm for Governor Romney's plans to strengthen our economy," said convention Chief Executive Officer William Harris.

Former Governor Jeb Bush

"This election comes down to a fundamental choice - between Mitt Romney's commitment to business innovation and job growth and the president's record of government taxation and takeovers. This choice comes at a critical time for our country. We are facing tremendous challenges and our response to them will determine the course of our nation for generations to come. There is a lot at stake for us in November and that is why I am proud to support Governor Mitt Romney as the next president of the United States and I look forward to being a part of his nomination at the Republican National Convention in my home state of Florida," said Jeb Bush.

Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin

"The election this November is about much more than politics. It is a decision we have to make about the direction of America - are we going to continue to tax and spend and grow government far past the point of sustainability, or are we going to restore fiscal sanity to Washington, D.C. and force government to live within its means? In Oklahoma, we work to make government serve the people and not the other way around. Our next president has to share this same commitment and that is why I am so proud to be a part of the Republican National Convention to officially nominate Mitt Romney," said Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin.

U.S. Senator Rand Paul

"In the past four years, we have seen the national debt soar at the hands of failed Democrat policies. We are nearing a fiscal cliff and are in desperate need of a change of direction. Whether it is Obamacare, Dodd-Frank or the EPA's war on coal, American jobs and growth are being stifled by the current policies. I believe Governor Romney would help our country start a new path, where job creators are encouraged not punished, and where the size and scope of government are brought under control. I am honored to speak about our Republican vision for the future at the national convention in Tampa," said Senator Rand Paul.

Former Senator Rick Santorum

"I am so passionate about this election because the core principles of our country are at stake. The Republican National Convention is an important time for us to rally behind Mitt Romney and his vision to put our country back on track. We need a leader in the White House who is committed to reforming government. Republicans believe that removing the incentive to work will destroy welfare reform as we know it, costing taxpayers millions and leading the poor to a life of dependency. The contrast between President Obama and Mitt Romney could not be greater. Conservatives from across the country are rallying together and we will make our voices heard in a few weeks in Tampa," said Senator Rick Santorum.

I hope Rand knocks it out of the park

But if his previous speech at CPAC was any indication, it will basically be RNC talking points, sticking to the script and making as few waves as possible.

In the long term it may be a good strategy, but really a lot depends on what Rand wants to do in his political life.

Rand will never be a serious Presidential candidate as long as the neo-con press such as Bill Kristol, Charles Krauthammer, Anne Coulter and the other morons inexplicably get to play kingmakers in the RNC, while not having been voted into anything themselves, and having dubious conservative values.

Until these assclowns are eliminated from the airwaves, Liberty will not be allowed into the Republican party.

is this speaking slot his 30

is this speaking slot his 30 pieces of silver?

Truth, Justice and the American way.

wtf

shut the hell up. seriously. stop saying he is selling out. so it's ok for ron paul to speak there but not his son? man you people make me sick...

I liked Rand

I liked Rand and thought he was pretty farkin' cool right up until HE ENDORSED ROMNEY.

I suppose you could argue he is playing the double agent to get his foot in the door. I guess time will tell.

Truth, Justice and the American way.

He is

He is a sell out. Any one that endorses Romney is a sell out and if you vote for him in Nov your a sell out too! I like Rand and what he says but he is still a sell out.

I really don't understand...

how anyone can trust Rand anymore. Whether he's a traitor or not he is heading in the wrong direction. He could have stuck to principles like his father and not compromised. Anyone can be bought out. I would hope that's not the case here. If he ever does try to become President he may have a hard time winning people back over. He just does not have the record his father does...no one does...

Isaiah 2:4
And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.

Great point... no one has Ron's record

Our local liberty campaign meets a couple of times a month, and we come from all kinds of backgrounds:

- those who can't believe they're supporting a Republican candidate in Ron Paul
- those who will vote for Romney because they think he's the surest way to beat Obama
- life long libertarians who would prefer to not be involved at all

None of us can be Ron Paul, but we are trying to make a difference. We donate, plan events and follow through, we educate the public with seminars (the last was a discussion on the FED and we have a delegate schedule to give a speech tomorrow). We have different points of view and different voting plans... but we show up.

Rand can't be his father either, but it doesn't mean he's a traitor to the liberty movement. If it takes nothing less Ron Paul to make a difference, we're screwed.

I can't say I care much one way or the other.

I am convinced that the US will never be a free country again unless there is a violent revolution, and even then chances are slim. Those in power are not about to voluntarily end the current fascist/socialist system of plunder and control, that is certain.

Unfortunately, the numbers of citizens who would choose to end or severely limit the federal government are not yet sufficient to matter. The way to win them over is not through their minds, but through their stomachs, and when the pain and suffering finally becomes sufficient many, many more will become willing enemies of the system.

What will change people will be financial collapse which will be followed by economic collapse and political collapse. Look at the USSR in the 1990's for an example of how it works, except you can't count on the federal government to go away peacefully like the USSR government did.

We are entering the end of the industrial age for want of sufficient energy to fuel it; economic growth is not only ending, but economic contraction will become the norm with the economy being cut in half repeatedly every 25 years or so well into the future. On top of that, we have a monetary system that requires economic growth to keep the shell game going; that system collects interest on loans that were created when the banks created checking account balances out of thin air and loaned them into circulation. The interest was a way for banks to plunder the lions share of economic growth for themselves, but with no or negative economic growth, the interest and even the loans cannot be repaid. There will be financial collapse.

It is all about energy, honest money, and destroyed free markets, and the majority are clueless, and probably incapable of understanding. Wait until unemployment, disease, and starvation are rampant and you will discover just how insignificant the current impossible, peaceful struggle is. So again, I can't say I care much one way or the other whether Ron Paul speaks at the Convention; the only listeners would be we who already understand his message, and we are so few in numbers as to be statistically insignificant.

Liberty isn't given to us; it is taken by us, and if not, we will not have it.

As I said yesterday, I

As I said yesterday, I thought tbe GOP might indeed make a place for Rand to give his predictably pro-Romney speech. This is just an attempt to neuter the liberty movement as an adjunct of the GOP, under the titular leadership of Rand.

Rand Paul is a controller pure and simple

Rand Paul wants to rule Ron Paul wants to liberate.

Mike Benoit

GET READY - and mark these words.

Rand is going to give a rah-rah that both Romney and our people are going to appreciate.

Then he is going to endorse Romney again from the state.

BRACE YOURSELVES

No need to brace ourselves.

No need to brace ourselves. Those of us with a least a half a brain know that Rand will pretty much kiss Romney's ass in front of millions.

Outstanding !!!

This is great news! Not only will Ron win the right to speak prime time unedited, but Rand has been invited as well. We will be hitting them from all sides. LOL. Three Cheers for LIBERTY. Whoot !

Not sure if that's sarcasm... but I like it either way!

I don't want Ron or Rand to turn down a chance to speak.

I think Ron has earned a speaking slot, but I would like for him to speak at the convention in any capacity (being nominated by the delegates or simply invited). It's another opportunity to reach people, so I wouldn't want him to turn it down.

No, Rand isn't his father and I don't think his speaking will sway Ron Paul supporters in how or if they vote, but I don't want him to turn down a speaking slot, either. Again, it's a chance to reach people. Someone who isn't open to Ron right now might be open to Rand.

Rand can still be effective in the liberty movement and something he says in his speech could cause people to investigate something they never have, or listen to some of Ron's speeches. You never know what the catalyst will be. There's still a lot of sleepy people.

The only thing I want Rand to say is

I have taken a long hard look at Mitt Romney...... and in all conscience I cannot endorse him.

I cannot endorse the destruction of the Republican Party with a landslide defeat in November.

"In the end, more than they wanted freedom, they wanted security. They wanted a comfortable life, and they lost it all -- security, comfort, and freedom. When ... the freedom they wished for was freedom from responsibility, then Athens ceased to be free."

If only...

that would be amazing and make me respect Rand again. But I doubt hell will freeze over in time for this opportunity to be able to take place.

Isaiah 2:4
And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.

I know a lot of people are

I know a lot of people are dissapointed in Rand...but lets be realistic here. You can look at Ron Pauls entire career and great statesman that he is...he really was not effective in changing things...in fact its not until now with the traction he has gained running for POTUS that a bill he sponsored has gained any serious traction(and Rand did after all sponsor the senate version of audit the fed). Rand is still his father's son and is still influenced by Ron...in fact I would go so far as to say Ron told Rand to endorse Romney. Lets face it...Rand is a rising star in the mainstream GOP...Both Ron and Rand are aware of this and are looking at that future presidential bid. I understand the thought of compromise and appearing to go along with these neocons is sickening to some...but the reality is that Rand will have more of a real effect than Ron did. Just look at this campaign...Ron launched a bid from the outside...and was defeated by lying, cheating, etc. There is only one way short of violence to take down the system...and thats from the inside. After all....when Rome fell the Visigoths didnt break down the doors....they were ordered open by a Roman senator.(ignore the fact that the city was starving for 2 years before it got to this point)

Okay if this is true, please

Okay if this is true, please tell me why Rand didn't lift a finger to campaign at the crucial state conventions in the months before the endorsement even though these mostly took place on weekends or when the Senate was not in session.

SteveMT's picture

You have made an excellent effort to put a happy face on this.

As with timing of Rand's endorsement of Romney, the GOP announcement of Rand being placed on the speaking schedule also comes at the worst possible time. As the Ron Paul delegates are being ruthlessly picked-off by this same GOP, Rand gets this opportunity. As the delegates are struggling for recognition at this convention and Ron Paul has no place at this table, Rand gets recognized by this same GOP without any apparent problem. Ron Paul is retiring from Congress. If Ron Paul told Rand to endorse Romney, do you also believe that he told Rand to go ahead and speak in Tampa? Why not? I do not believe that. Rand should tell the GOP that his father is the presidential candidate and his father is retiring from Congress with the unblemished voting record. If Ron Paul gets no speaking time in Tampa, then he will also not attend. What is the hurry for Rand Paul to jump on-board of the sinking ship of the same republican party that never gave Ron Paul the time of day and that never acknowledged Ron Paul's existence for 30 years. It's disgusting, IMO and smacks of political expediency and opportunism.
